Electric Skillet FAQ

What to Look For When Buying an Electric Skillet

There are a few things to look for when buying an Electric frypan or  skillet and we have listed these below.

Material

Most electric frypans or skillets use a non stick base or cooking surface. Some of the higher end electric frypans or skillets are made using stainless steel – see the all clad review above – although these may not necessarily be better.

Shape

Round or square? Most electric skillets come in a square or rectangle shape. Shape is important if you have minimal space or also need to think about storage. Naturally a round electric frypan will take up more room in your cupboards.

Capacity

How many people are you cooking for? What are you cookin? make sure you check the size fo the cooking surface and the depth of the walls before you purchase.

Non-Stick Coating

Most of the electric frypans on the market today have non-stick coatings. This seems to be the norm. One thing to be wary of when using a pan with a non stick coating is try not to use metal utensils as these can scratch the cooking surface and wreck your skillet.

Controls and Heat Settings

Having a temperature control dial is important for setting the correct temperature. Some electric frypans/ skillets are also a ‘bang bang’ connection which means they really have only on and off. When the temperature reaches  certain point the skillet will turn off. When it cools a bit – it will turn back on. This is quite normal in some of the cheaper products – but they still work fine.

Safety

Things like high sidewalls, tempered glass lid, detachable cord.

Make sure you look at any safety features that are offered. Some electric frypans/ skillets will also come with an automatic off switch although this can sometimes be more of a hindrance if you are trying to use it for just keeping food warm.

Adjustable Steam Vents

Some electric frypans will come with a tempered glass lid that has a vent hole to let steam out.  It is important that this vent hole is adjustable so that you can open and close it because when you want to use your electric skillet as an oven to bake something – you don’t want to let the hot air escape.

Can you bake in an Electric Skillet?

Yes you can bake in an electric skillet. This question is asked a lot and actually baking in an electric frypan or skillet is a lot easier than you think. You can indeed bake in an electric skillet, you can bake things like brownies, cakes, muffins, bread and even potatoes! To bake a cake you will need an electric skillet that is deep enough to hold you cake tin in. Simply pre-heat it  and make sure the lid is on. Pour you cake batter into the baking tin and then you put the baking tin into you electric skillet and put the lid on. This makes it act like an oven. To bake cookies you can often just lay them straight onto the skillet (or maybe some foil) and again put the lid on. Usually cakes and cookies are baked at about 450 DegF. The same goes for corn bread or even potatoes – just use your electric skillet like a mini oven.

One thing to be careful of though is if you lid has a steam vent. If so you will need to turn this off or block it somehow when you use you electric frypan or skillet for baking.

Can you cook Pizza in an electric skillet?

Yes indeed you can – but you will definitely need to use a lid. Make sure you pre heat it and if your pizza is frozen it is probably a good idea to defrost it first.  Keep a lid on the pizza until the cheese melts, then crisp up the bottom. Use low heat and watch carefully.

What are the benefits of using an electric skillet over a stovetop skillet?

Using an electric frypan or skillet actually has many benefits. An electric skillet is often larger than most skillets or fry pans meaning that you can cook more food. Many of them are actually deep dish so you can use it for a range of cooking styles and purposes. It is easy to control the temperature as they all have a temperature control dial and it is easier to achieve an even heating surface as well. Many electric frypans or skillets have non-stick cooking surfaces but you do need to be careful not to scratch them with metal utensils. Also you can use an electric frypan to keep food warm in a buffet setting or even if you are having a party at home. On top of this you can have a bit more freedom of where to cook when using an electric skillet – all you need is a long extension cord or a power outlet of some kind and you are away!

How do you season an electric skillet?

Most electric skillets have non stick coatings so they don’t really need to be seasoned. But you can season them if you want to. Simply cover the inside of your skillet with a dash of oil and heat it up. (not too much! you don’t want to burn down your house!) When it begins to smoke – turn off the heat. Wait for it to cool and then use a paper towel to wipe off the excess oil.

Are Electric Skillets Worth it?

The advantage of having an electric skillet is that it can quite often hold a steady temperature better than most frypans on the stove. It’s great for doing stuff like frying doughnuts, cooking pancakes, or frying other foods.

Can you cook rice in an Electric Skillet?

Yes you can cook rice in an electric skillet. You can pretty much use any electric skillet to cook rice – simply wash the rice first and then strain it before putting in the skillet. Now add a little water to the skillet – usually the ratio of rice to water is one cup of rice to two cups of water but sometimes to is best to use a little bit less water. Make sure you have the lid on and then turn up your heat. Once the water starts to boil turn off the heat and just let the rice absorb the rest of the water – make sure you keep the lid on.

Can you cook biscuits in an Electric Skillet?

Yes you can cook biscuits in an Electric Skillet. You can use and electric frying pan to cook many things. To cook biscuits follow the same steps as cooking brownies or using it as an oven. Make sure you use the tempered glass lid.

Can you make brownies in an Electric Skillet?
