Cooking a great steak starts with your cooking tools. If you’re looking for a cook steak frying pan, there are a few features you should be on the lookout for.
- Heavyweight design – Heavier is always better for a steak pan. Heavy stainless steel and aluminum pans absorb more heat, and maintain a more steady temperature.
- Handles high heat well – When you’re cooking a steak, you need to get your pan blazing hot. That means most non-stick pans are usually not a great choice for steak – the nonstick coating is not usually safe over 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 10-inch diameter (minimum) – You need to give your steak plenty of room to breathe, and a higher surface area ensures that your entire steak contacts the frying surface at once.
Our recommendation for cooking steak would be a 10-12 inch frying pan or saucepan built out of a heavy-duty, high-grade stainless steel. - Rub your steak all over with a blend of olive oil, salt, and pepper. The oil will help heat move through the steak, and ensure even cooking. It will also prevent sticking.
- Place your steak in your pan and depending on thickness wait a minute or two before you flip it over.
- Continue flipping your steak once every few minutes for 6-8 minutes or so (depending on the thickness and how you want it cooked). Get the fat on the sides so that it is being seared by the side of the pan. This will result in a perfectly-seared, steak.
